Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a major concern in military and Veteran communities. Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families is a Canadian nonprofit which seeks to improve access to care and support for Canadian Veterans and families. The organization works with Veterans and their families to understand their needs and inform what resources are created.

To support victims of abuse within the veteran community, Atlas Institute created the IPV Knowledge Hub. Materials in this resource are intended to help Veterans and their families identify IPV and seek support. They reached out to Anatomii Studios to design a set of educational resources for the hub. I collaborated with the Anatomii team to create the concept art for two videos in the series.

Anatomii Studio conducted design sessions with a Veteran advisory committee. These insights were instrumental in developing an approach that was true to the experiences of the Veteran community while maintaining sensitivity to the subject material. Visuals for the animation feature calm and neutral colours (blues, greens). Scenes explicitly discussing abuse are illustrated using metaphors, silhouettes, disembodied eyes, and shadows. While one video uses a singular main character who experiences abuse, the second video represents characters with a wide diversity of characteristics, including age, ethnicity, body type, and sexual orientation (gay, straight, etc). This diversity reflects the Veteran community, and the fact that IPV can happen to anyone.
